PHELPS COUNTY, Mo. (KY3) – Several people were taken to the hospital, and a dog was rescued after a crash on I-44 Sunday evening.
According to the Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District, the crash happened on I-44 near mile marker 174 in the eastbound lanes.
The fire district says five people were taken to the hospital. Fire crews on the scene also learned that a dog was in one of the cars involved.
Fire crews say after the crash, the dog jumped off the bridge into the Little Piney Creek below the interstate. The fall was between 70-80 feet, according to the fire district.
One of the firefighters went to rescue the dog.
“He located the injured dog on the opposite side of the creek lying on the bank. Senior Firefighter Hook quickly entered the water where he was able to safely swim across to assess the dog,” the fire district says.
Firefighter Hook swam back across the creek with the dog. The fire district says a good samaritan stopped and took the dog to a veterinary hospital in Rolla for treatment.
The fire district says the dog did have serious injuries but should make a full recovery, barring any complications.
