PHOENIX — 12News gives back to the community in many ways but one that’s special to our station is the Tegna Foundation Grant. These grants are given to amazing organizations in the community, making a difference every day. One of the recipients is the American Service Animal Society.
This organization provides equipment and training, so our service men and women have helpful companions at no cost. The group told 12News they used the $8,000 to continue turning man’s best friend into trained service animals assisting our military members.
Lanister, Schatzi Mae and Hudson Rose are just some of the dogs that continually train at the East Valley facility. Commands start simple and grow more complex to meet Veteran’s like Dave Delano’s needs.

“This is Schatzi Mae, we’ve been together for 6 years, we were married up with through Dogs and Vets and she helps me with a tremendous number of tasks,” Delano said.
Delano explained, that after many avenues, the solution was his peer-bred German Shepard. After 20 years in the United States Navy getting back to civilian life for him was difficult.
“I spent 20 years in the Navy to include: 10 deployments, I boarded illegal Iraqi oil smugglers from ’96-2001, then I did two tours in Iraq.”
Delano says he’s found peace and purpose post-combat and confidence with his K-9.
“They bring in your own dog and train you as a team,” said Delano.
That’s what owner Shaun Claseman says is special about the American Service Animal Society, it’s your own fur baby.
“Your dog knows you, if you’re having a good day they know it, if you’re having a not-so-good day, they’re right by your side. They’re always talking to us,” he explained.
Claseman’s dad and stepmom started the nonprofit recognizing the need and have been giving back to veterans since 2006.
“The grant really helped us continue providing the supplies and equipment members need to make sure they are getting the most out of their training together. Everything adds up,” Claseman added.
