
SALEM, Ore. (KATU) — The Oregon State Correctional Institution (OSCI) is set to host a “passing of the leash” ceremony on April 28, 2025.
This event, done in partnership with Joys of Living Assistance Dogs (JLAD), marks the graduation of several dogs from “in training” to full “Service Animal” status, with their recipients present to celebrate the milestone.
The JLAD program, newly established at OSCI, has been bringing joy and new life to the adults in custody (AIC) who are responsible for training the service dogs.
The ceremony will feature a presentation of the skills the dogs have acquired during their training.

The event will take place in the multipurpose room of the Oregon State Correctional Institution, located at 3405 Deer Park Drive SE, Salem, Oregon. The opening ceremony is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with check-in beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Joys of Living Assistance Dogs is a non-profit organization dedicated to training and placing assistance dogs to support individuals with disabilities, fostering greater freedom and independence.
