Two people are expected to be okay after being shot at the Osage Casino Hotel in Tulsa last week, but two dogs were also shot after their owners stepped in to help the victims. Deputies say one dog was killed and the other is missing.
Man’s Best Friend
Blake and Sara Scowden are owners of two dogs: 11-year-old Busch and 3-year-old Cora.
“They’re our worlds,” said Sara.
As a disabled combat veteran, Cora was a lifeline for Blake. As his service dog, she was trained to ground and desensitize Blake during moments of anxiety. Busch was also trained as a therapy dog. The dogs were part of every journey with the couple, including a trip to Tulsa that ended in heartbreak.
Hotel Stay Turned Nightmare
On April 12th, Osage County deputies say a man and woman were shot on the first floor of the Osage Casino Hotel, right outside of the couple’s room. That’s when Blake jumped into action, opened the door and dragged the victims into their hotel room to try to help them. Once the door opened, the dogs ran out towards the woods. Cora was found hours later.
“Cora was found covered in blood, deceased on someone’s front porch, and she had been shot,” said Sara.
The couple has spent the last week holding out hope they’ll find Busch, but say that hope has faded every hour that passes.
“Since our other dog was shot, we kind of just feel like so is he, and he probably just is in the woods somewhere,” said Sara.
This loss comes at an already hard time for Sara, who was visiting her father in hospice and is already the caregiver for her mother with dementia. To help the couple out, click here.
