AUGUSTA, Maine (WGME) — Maine now has an official state dog.
The Maine Legislature enacted a bill to make the Seppala Siberian sleddog the official state dog.
Supporters say the dogs “embody the grit and ingenuity that have carried Mainers through our toughest times.”
They were relied on 100 years ago for transporting life-saving medical treatment.
Supporters also say the dogs delivered mail beyond the postal service’s route and played a role in historic expeditions across Maine.
The bill became law on Sunday without Gov. Janet Mills’ signature.
