A senior dog at a California shelter was set to be adopted right before Christmas — then his prospective owners canceled their meet-and-greet.
Pet Rescue Solutions in South El Monte, Calif., is now searching for a new home for the elderly canine. Before this disappointment, Manny arrived at the rescue after a passerby spotted the dog motionless in the middle of a road and got help for the pet, thinking the canine had been hit by a car.
He was “seemingly ready to give up,” said a spokesperson for Pet Rescue Solutions told Newsweek.
“They stopped to move him to safety and realized he was still alive — just exhausted, emaciated, and covered in mange,” the spokesperson continued.
Pet Rescue Solutions said rescuers tracked down Manny’s former owners, but the pet parents rejected attempts to reunite them with their dog.
Considering Manny’s age, Pet Rescue Solutions guessed that he spent more than a decade building trust with his former owners before they abandoned him.
The California organization added that Manny still shows warmth and a great desire for companionship despite what he has endured. The shelter hopes his loving personality will attract a new owner who is ready to commit to loving the dog.
Pet Rescue Solutions thought they found that person shortly before Christmas when someone reached out to set up an appointment to adopt the dog. However, right before the prospective owner’s scheduled meet-and-greet with Manny, they backed out, citing the 20-pound dog as “too big” for them.
Even with this setback, the rescue is confident Manny will find a forever home that appreciates him.

“Manny loves oversized stuffed toys, building cozy blanket nests, and mealtime. He also adores gentle pets and belly rubs. Despite being a senior, he still has a spring in his step and enjoys little adventures,” Pet Rescue Solutions shared. “The perfect home for Manny would be one filled with love, patience, and warm spots to curl up and feel safe. Maybe a daily walk … he does not ask for much.”
