More than 2,000 dogs spanning over 150 breeds are gathered in one spot this weekend, and they’re ready for their close-ups.
The Rose City Classic Dog Show, the biggest of its kind in the Northwest, is once again taking up shop at the Portland Expo Center. The five-day show, which officially began Wednesday, features several competitive events, including obedience, agility, scent training and tricks.
The show also hosts the American Kennel Club (AKC) agility trials, where spectators can watch some of the fastest dogs in the United States perform. Each event, and there are several more than listed here, will end up with a top winner. Breeding events, or breed stock, as they’re known, will offer Best in Show designations.
“This is kind of a launch pad for Westminster,” said Patti Strand, a volunteer at the show. “It’s the last big show before Westminster,” she said.
For individuals and families interested in taking on a pooch as a pet, the dog show is a good place to do some research. Through the weekend, a Meet-the Breeds showcase invites people to meet local AKC breeders to learn about and interact with the different breeds.
Portland has played host to the Rose City Classic Dog Show since 1939. The show eventually found a home at the Portland Expo Center, which has hosted the event since 1948.
If you’re considering taking your dog to the event, best to leave ol’ pal at home. The only dogs allowed at the dog show are the ones featured in it.
The Rose City Classic Dog Show runs 8 a.m.-6 p.m. daily through Sunday. Tickets are available online and in person.
