Second Chance seeks ‘forever homes’ for two large dogs

ARLINGTON — Second Chance Animal Center is seeking specialized homes for two large dogs that have been at the shelter for some time.

Orion, who has been at the shelter for over three years is of primary concern.

Orion is a six-year-old pit bull mix and, at 60 lbs., he is no lightweight.

He is powerfully built. He loves to run and play. He’s got energy, but he also has a sense of calm confidence about him.

“Orion is a sweet boy who loves chewing on his toys and being a giant goof,” said Troy Quinn, as he watched Orion. “He’s been here for a long time. Sometimes, that just happens.”

He instructed Orion to sit. Orion sat, and waited for a treat.

“He would love a home with lots of space to run around and play,” said Quinn, but he did note that there are things that Orion would need in a home that are hard to find. He needs activity; he needs a physical outlet for his energy.

“It would be great to see Orion with someone who runs,” said Quinn, noting that Orion would probably thrive in that environment.

Orion also needs a home that is used to working with energetic dogs, and is used to training. Obedience training takes consistency and work, but Orion is a dog that would be receptive. He wants to please.

Orion nuzzles and sniffs as he explores the room – almost as though he doesn’t have a care in the world. He is gentle and soft in his interactions.

Orion could go to a home without other pets and he would do well with children over 13 years of age.

Hippo is another dog that has been at the shelter for some time.

Hippo is a 70 lb. pit bull terrier, and is about the same age as Orion. His coat is a golden brown, with large patches of white.

His eyes are brown and very alert – and he’s a sniffer. He explores the room, finds the toys, and rips into them. Fluff flies everywhere. He needs tougher toys.

“He’s a big boy. He’s got a lot of energy. And he likes to chew – don’t you?” Quinn said to Hippo, as he watched the large dog interact with two young women who came to the shelter.

On Hippo’s intake sheet, he is described as playful, loyal, and energetic. It also states that he’s in need of an active home without other pets or young children, and preferably a home with experience with resource guarding.

Quinn again reiterated that Hippo would need to go to a home where his new owner could focus on spending time with him, on basic obedience training, and on providing the things that Hippo desperately needs – mainly, an outlet for all of that powerful energy and a person – or persons – to love.

Hippo’s perfect home might also be with someone who runs, or who has a really large fenced-in yard.

“He’s got a lot of energy,” said Quinn, rubbing Hippo’s side as the dog leaned into him. “He’s a good boy, though. He’s just got a lot of energy.”

Both Orion and Hippo are strong, powerful, and beautiful dogs – and they need to find the right forever home. That home needs to be with a special someone – or someones – who are as loyal, loving, committed, and active as they are.

“We believe that all dogs can be trained, no matter how old they are,” added Quinn. “They just need someone to work with them.”

Those interested in adopting or visiting Orion or Hippo are encouraged to stop in at the shelter and meet them.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
