Search underway for person who abandoned three dogs in Walker County

The abandonment of animals in Walker County continues after three dogs were left on the side of a road in Rossville on Friday.

Two days after Christmas, a woman was driving down South Washington Road in Rossville when she spotted a deceased dog in a plastic bag on the side of the road and another dog roaming around it.

The woman called the Walker County Animal Shelter (WCAS) for help.

Tyler Bishop, animal control manager for the shelter, said he found both dogs when arrived at the area.

“While removing that dog, I heard what sounded like a whimpering sound of another dog coming from across the roadway. I investigated that to see where that sound was coming from and located a second dog that was inside of a crate, a brown and white dog, that was whimpering. The crate was really small and the dog was crammed in there,” Bishop said.

The dogs are believed to have been abandoned between 4:00am and 8:00am on December 27.

Bishop said the dogs were left in cold and wet weather conditions.

“I quickly removed the other dog out of the rain and got it loaded onto my truck and further examined the deceased dog. The deceased dog was very emaciated. As far as the cause of death, [I am] not sure. We did check all of them for microchips in hopes of locating a possible owner,” Bishop said.

The shelter is currently asking people who may know who left the dogs on the side of the road to contact them.

They are hoping to hold the that person responsible for his or her actions.

“Recently, we have had several abandonment cases where people have been charged and they can face fines up to a $1,000. In the last 10 or so cases in court and they have been ordered not to own any dogs for a certain period of time and generally that is up to five years,” Bishop said.

When dogs are abandoned and rescued it hurts them for future ownership.

“When we bring in a stray and we don’t have any information on that dog and it sets the dog up for failure for us to be able not to know the characteristics of the dog to further help the dog get adopted out,” Bishop added.

If you have any information about this case, please call the WCAS at 706-375-2100 Ext. 1 or send an email. All tips can remain anonymous.
