
COWLITZ COUNTY, Wash. (KATU) — An 18-year-old and a 24-year-old hiker, along with their three dogs, were successfully rescued after getting lost in the snow at Coldwater Lake near Mt. St. Helens.
The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office received the distress call just after 6 p.m. on Thursday.
The hikers’ location was initially determined using cellphone data before their phone lost power.

Sheriff’s deputies and Search and Rescue (SAR) team members responded promptly. A FLIR drone was deployed to confirm the hikers’ location and remained overhead to guide the SAR ground team.
Contact was made with the hikers at approximately 10:33 p.m., and they were safely escorted back to the South Coldwater Trailhead by 12:05 a.m. No injuries were reported.
Sheriff Brad Thurman expressed gratitude to all responders for the positive outcome and reminded hikers to “dress properly, bring food and water, and make sure your cell phone is charged” when venturing out.
