ASHLAND — The Lake Superior Sea Dogs cleaned up their schedule and picked up a pair of wins in rain-postponed Upper 13 League amateur baseball games on Sunday, taking down the Tony Hayshakers 5-1 and the Ashland Merchants 16-4.
Against Tony, Brock McDermid worked around a solo homer in the fourth inning to give Lake Superior seven strong innings, allowing the onerun on seven hits.
The Sea Dogs took the lead in the fifth on a wild pitch and an RBI fielder’s choice. Nik Mattson’s RBI fielder’s choice in the sixth made it 3-1 and the Sea Dogs tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning.
In a seven-inning game against the Merchants, the Sea Dogs found themselves down 4-1 after three innings before a six-run fourth, followed by an eight-run seventh that triggered the run rule.
Eric Hinnenkamp, Austin Parroott and Donny Miller had three hits each in the win. Parrott scored four times and both Hinnenkamp and Hayden Smith drove in three runs. Tanner Flahaven got the win for Lake Superior, allowing four runs on eight hits in four innings.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
