The Portland Sea Dogs took advantage of an error in the fifth inning to score three runs and end a six-game losing streak by beating the Somerset Patriots 4-3 in the first game of an Eastern League doubleheader Wednesday at Bridgewater, New Jersey.
Somerset held a 2-1 lead after four innings. In the fifth, Caden Rose singled for the Sea Dogs, who loadeded the bases on walks to Ahbram Liendo and Zach Ehrhard. Marvin Alcantara reached on a throwing error by Patriots catcher Rafael Flores, allowing Rose and Liendo to score. Allan Castro then had an RBI single to give Portland a 4-2 lead.
Giancarlo Stanton, who has yet to play for the Yankees this season as he recovers from tendon injuries in both elbows, had an RBI double in the first inning. He flied out in the seventh with the tying run on first.
Marcus Stroman, who hasn’t pitched for the Yankees since April 11 with a lingering left knee injury, started for the Patriots. In his first rehab start, he went 3 1/3 innings. He allowed one hit and one run. He walked two and struck out four.
Connelly Early improved to 5-0 for the Sea Dogs. He pitched five innings and allowed three runs, one earned. He walked one and struck out eight. Yovanny Cruz pitched two scoreless innings for his third save.
