Ronald Rosario’s ninth-inning RBI single led the Portland Sea Dogs to a 3-2 Eastern League win over the Reading Fightin Phils on Sunday to sweep their season-opening series in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Rosario’s single scored Max Ferguson, who led off the inning with a walk.
Tyler Miller got Portland (3-0) on the scoreboard with a two-run homer in the seventh inning that gave the visitors a 2-1 lead. Reading tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Paul McIntosh’s single scored Hendry Mendez.
The Fightin Phils (0-3) opened the scoring in the fourth on a Keaton Anthony single that scored Trent Farquhar.
Portland’s Gabriel Jackson pitched 1 2/3 shutout innings of relief to earn the win. Jonathan Brand recorded the final out to earn his first save of the year.
Portland starter Connelly Early struck out six batters and walked one in 3 2/3 innings. He did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning.
The Sea Dogs have Monday off before they greet the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in Tuesday’s home opener at 6 p.m.
