SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNOP) – The Scottsbluff Fire Department responded to a garage fire on the city’s northside Thursday.
It happened on the 3600 block of Spruce Drive at 1:30 p.m. after a neighbor reported the fire.
Officers with the Scottsbluff Police Department also responded and found three dogs inside the home alone.
Fire Prevention Officer Chris Perales Jr. said while the high winds posed a challenge, crews were able to make a quick knock down of the fire and contain it to the garage due to the quick response of the neighbor.
The cause of the fire was ruled accidental and started on the exterior of the garage where ashes from a wood burning stove had been disposed of in a trash can.
“This is a great reminder that prior to disposing of ashes, you want to ensure they are cooled down and we even encourage you douse the ashes with water,” Perales said.
The total damage is estimated around $15,000.
Gering Fire Department, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Regional West EMS, Nebraska Public Power District and Black Hills Energy provided assistance.
Assistance was offered to the family. However, there were no needs.
