Scottsbluff Fire was dispatched to a structure fire in the 3600 block of Spruce Drive around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
Upon arrival Scottsbluff Police had made entry into the home and were able to save the three dogs, there were no occupants home at the time of the fire which was called in by a neighbor.
“While this fire could have been a lot worse due to the wind, due to the attentiveness of a neighbor, crews were able to make a quick knock down of the fire and the fire was contained to the garage,” says Scottsbluff Fire Prevention Officer Chris Perales.
He says during the investigation it was determined that the fire was accidental and started on the exterior of the garage where ashes from a wood burning stove had been disposed of in a trash can. The fire then got up into the eaves and into the attic space of the garage where it was contained.
“This is a great reminder that prior to disposing of ashes, you want to ensure they are cooled down and we even encourage you douse the ashes with water,” noted Perales.
It’s estimated the fire caused $15,000 in damages to the home.
Additional agencies on scene included Gering Fire Department, Scotts Bluff County Sheriffs Office, Regional West EMS, NPPD and Black Hills Energy. Assistance was offered to the family, however at this time, there were no needs.
