A rescue dog’s transformation from being afraid to slowly trusting humans melted hearts, but the owner shared with Newsweek that she’s “still a work in progress.”
Most dogs need time to adjust to their new homes, and a typical timeline people follow is called the “3, 3, 3 rule.” This rule offers owners a general time frame for when their dogs decompress and feel comfortable. The first three days will consist of your dog being nervous and unsure. By three weeks, they will start to feel settled, and by three months, they usually have built a bond and feel entirely at home.
However, that is just a guideline, and owner Tara learned that her rescue dog, Daisy, has needed longer than that to adjust to her forever home.
“It took her about a week to even get off the couch and walk around the house,” Tara told Newsweek. “She is still a work in progress.”
Other than learning Daisy lived in a flea-infestation home with three pit bulls, Tara said she is unsure about what else Daisy has gone through. She thinks the dogs perhaps ate Daisy’s food because she eats extremely fast, as if she might not get any more.
“I don’t entirely know what she’s been through, but she is afraid of a lot of things,” Tara said. “If I say no to her, like when she was chewing my kid’s toy, she pees herself, and I say it very gently like, ‘No, no, Daisy.'”
She added: “If she has an accident in the house, she hides and cries in a corner. I don’t even acknowledge her accidents because she looks scared enough just from it happening. It’s usually if we leave for a while.”
It hasn’t been easy for Daisy, but she’s surrounded by a family who is showing her nothing but love and patience. Tara’s video posted to TikTok this week (@bubblegumshrimps) shows how far her dog has come. From being terrified of every sound to not wanting to go anywhere alone, Daisy has slowly come out of her shell.
Daisy has turned a corner in her healing journey, running around the yard knowing she’s free. She’s found her best doggy friend, who wouldn’t stop licking her in the video. Plus, she’s become comfortable with the family’s child. Part of the clip shows the two cuddling on the couch with Daisy’s belly up, happily accepting pets.
