SAN ANTONIO – Five dogs believed to be involved in an attack on West Southcross Boulevard earlier this month have now been deemed dangerous.
San Antonio Animal Care Services confirmed the designation Tuesday.
The dogs reportedly got loose from their yard and bit a woman in the leg. They were also seen on video jumping on a San Antonio police car, scratching and biting it.
Officials say eight dogs were involved in that incident.
Even though there is a fence around the yard and an enclosure in the backyard, the owner told News 4/Fox SA the dogs always found a way over or under the gates.
Neighbors shared several videos of the dogs out along West Southcross Blvd on other occasions, chasing people on bikes or roaming near businesses.
ACS confirmed the owner had several citations before this bite.
Now that a judge has deemed the dogs dangerous, a strict set of state requirements is triggered for the dogs and the owners.
The dog must be:
- licensed
- wear a special identification collar
- be kept in a secure enclosure
- be muzzled when outside
- be microchipped
- spayed/neutered
The owner must:
- purchase a $100,000 liability insurance policy
- post a special warning sign
- attend a pet ownership class
- allow an annual inspection
ACS tells us in a statement that the owner has 30 days to come into compliance in order to reclaim the dogs:
The 5 dogs Involved in the incident on Southcross have all been declared Dangerous and that process is moving forward. The Dangerous Dog law allows for the owner to prove compliance within 30 days. In the meantime, the animals remain in ACS custody.
If the owner does come into compliance, this address would have the most registered dangerous dogs in San Antonio.
The registry currently shows the total at 6.
Previously, the highest number of dangerous dogs at one address was four.
You can see the dangerous dog registry here.
