A city of San Angelo Animal Services officer was attacked on Wednesday by two dogs and flown to Lubbock for his injuries, according to the city and police department.
Around 3 p.m. Wednesday, San Angelo Public Safety Communications received multiple 911 calls in reference to a man being attacked by numerous dogs in the 20th block of Cloud St.
Officers arrived and found the city employee had been attacked by at least two large breed dogs, causing injuries to his face, arms and legs.
Officers and medics with the fire department rendered medical aid and rapidly transported him to the Shannon emergency room.
Because of the severity of his injuries he was later airlifted to an out-of-area hospital for higher-level care, according to the city. The San Angelo police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the incident.
“Charges could be forthcoming depending on the outcome of that investigation,” according to the city.
According to witnesses, when the officer got to house, he discovered there were at least 10 dogs belonging to the owner. The two large, aggressive dogs got out when the owner opened the gate and attacked the officer.
After the incident, the dogs involved were surrendered by their owner to animal services and soon after were euthanized.
“This is consistent with local and state procedures after an incident of this severity,” according to police.
The officer sustained multiple bite wounds and lacerations, as well as a broken arm, and remains in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon.
“While we wait for further updates on the officer’s condition, I ask for this community to please pray for him and his family,” City Manager Daniel Valenzuela said. “This is a dedicated public servant whose life is at risk.”
More information will be provided when available.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Animal Services employee and his family as he recovers from his injuries,” the police department stated.
“The San Angelo Police Department will be supporting the Animal Services department with personnel needs during the course of this traumatic event as all of their department witnessed the incident,” police stated.
