KENNEWICK, Wash. – The threat of Salmon Poisoning Disease should convince dog owners to keep their pets away from dead fish.
According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Salmon and trout carcasses can contain bacteria in their blood that can kill dogs. Salmon Poisoning Disease is transmitted through parasitic flatworms that have Neorickettsia helminthoeca bacteria.
Dogs can survive salmon poisoning with proper treatment, but the disease includes symptoms of severe vomiting and diarrhea. Dogs that ate or went near a dead fish should be taken to the veterinarian right away. Early treatment can prevent serious illnesses.

Don’t leave fish gut piles or carcasses in places where dogs may encounter them.
