The father of a woman who was severely injured in a vicious dog attack last week is on a “desperate” mission to be by his daughter’s side as she fights for her life.
Jordan Garrett was rushed to hospital last Thursday after being mauled by three dogs at a home in Dandenong, Melbourne. Police tried to save her from the attack by using pepper spray on the animals but it had no effect, forcing officers to shoot them dead.
Ms Garrett remains in a critical condition, distraught friends and family confirmed in a fundraiser created on Tuesday to help her dad Lee Garrett travel from the UK where he lives.
“Lee desperately needs to be by her side during this unimaginably difficult time,” the GoFundMe reads. “As you can imagine, the emotional and financial toll this has taken on Lee is overwhelming.”
More than $7,000 has been raised so far to cover Mr Garrett’s flights, accomodation and “any additional costs so he can be there to support his daughter through her recovery”.
“No parent should be kept from their child when they are in critical condition, and we want to ensure that Lee doesn’t have to worry about the financial burden at a time like this,” friends said.
Woman reportedly set upon by dog days before bloody attack
The vicious dog attack — which occurred just one day before a woman in Townsville had her arm severed by her own dog — is under investigation by the Greater Dandenong City Council.
In the aftermath of the brutal attack, stunned neighbours told The Age they had seen Ms Garrett running from one of the dogs just a few days before she sustained life-threatening injuries. Residents “living in fear” also said they had reported the dogs, which reportedly belonged to Ms Garrett’s partner, to council in the past.
“We can acknowledge that Council has received numerous complaints and concerns from neighbours about dogs at this property in the past,” Dandenong Council chief executive Jacqui Weatherill told media in a statement.
“We have previously taken action in response to those concerns and visited the property.”
Ms Weatherill said council has commenced prosecution against a person living at the home over a separate dog-on-dog attack in July. This matter is due to go to court in November.
