Saco, Maine’s Best-Kept Secret: A Dog-Friendly Beach with All-Day Access

Let’s be honest, dogs often get the short end of the stick when it comes to beach access during Maine’s summer months.

As a dog owner, I know this all too well. Most beaches either have very strict time windows when dogs are permitted or don’t allow them at all.

I get it—not everyone is a dog lover. And no one should have to deal with someone else’s dog knocking over a sandcastle or swiping a few potato chips. But it’s still rough (no pun intended) for those of us who just want to enjoy a nice, sandy stroll with man’s best friend.

What Beach in Southern Miane Allows Dogs All Day?

Fortunately, there’s a beach in Southern Maine that’s the complete opposite of the norm—a beach that allows dogs not just before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m., but all day long. I’m talking about Saco’s Bayview Beach.

I hadn’t even heard of this beach until a random Google search. I was looking for a place that might actually allow dogs during the day. We typically take our guy to Pine Point in the evening. It’s a great beach, but not ideal for dogs if you’re hoping to enjoy it at midday.

As the results appeared, I noticed a beach I had never heard of before—one not far from our home. It was Bayview Beach, and in bold lettering, it said: DOGS PERMITTED ALL DAY.

I couldn’t believe what I was reading, but I wasn’t about to second-guess it. So we grabbed the dog, hopped in the car, and headed to this potential dog oasis. And that’s exactly what it was.

Bayview Beach is tucked away between Ocean Park and Ferry Beach State Park. There’s easy parking, adequate facilities, and dog waste bags are provided in case you forget one.

As we walked up to the beach, the views immediately blew our minds. Wood Island Light, Biddeford Pool, and the sweeping panorama of Old Orchard Beach all shone in their natural beauty.

Bayview Beach is Always Filled with Friendly Dogs and Their Owners

As we started walking, we realized this wasn’t just a beach to walk dogs—it was the beach to walk dogs. At times, there may have actually been more dogs than humans, which only made Bayview even more appealing. It felt like a scene out of Planet of the Apes—if the apes were just a bunch of friendly, goofy canines.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
