Rocky Mountain Therapy Dogs free programs bring healing statewide – TownLift, Park City News

HEBER CITY, Utah — Rocky Mountain Therapy Dogs (RMTD) is bringing health, hope, and healing to individuals and communities across Utah through the transformative power of therapy dogs. Founded in 2019 by Amy Francis, RMTD offers customized therapy, education, and outreach programs free of charge.

“Our mission is to provide comfort and healing wherever there’s a need,” said Francis, RMTD’s president and founder. “Whether it’s goal-oriented therapy with a specific outcome, like helping someone through mental health challenges, or simply being there to bring joy and comfort, our teams are here to make an impact.”

Francis highlighted the adaptability of RMTD’s services offered in schools, nursing homes, community centers, and private homes. “We don’t have a facility,” she explained. “Your company, school, or home becomes our facility. We go where we’re needed.”

One story that stands out to Francis is of a blind and autistic boy who was terrified of dogs. “A pediatrician reached out to us and asked if we could help desensitize him so he could eventually get a seeing-eye dog,” Francis said. “The sound of a collar or panting would scare him, but after just a few sessions in a park, he started to trust the dog. Now, years later, he has his own service dog in training, and our team continues to work with him. It’s been a transformative journey.”

Education is a cornerstone of RMTD’s work, with popular programs like dog body language and bite prevention workshops. “We tailor these programs for everyone, from elementary students to police officers,” Francis said. “It’s crucial that we educate the public about how to safely interact with dogs while fostering respect and understanding.”

Another signature initiative is the anti-bullying campaign, led by a handler with certified therapy pit bulls. “The goal is to break stereotypes,” Francis said. “Kids hear ‘bully breeds’ and often have negative associations, but we use the dogs to start conversations about not judging others by appearances. It’s an engaging way to talk about empathy and kindness.”

RMTD’s partnerships also enhance its community impact. “We’ve been collaborating with Encircle, an LGBTQ+ community center in Heber City, attending their monthly brunches,” Francis said. “The dogs help create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. It’s amazing how just having a dog in the room can make people feel more comfortable and supported.”

Beyond therapy and education, RMTD offers petting stations at community events, providing brief but meaningful interactions with therapy dogs. “Even just two minutes with a dog can calm someone down and shift their energy,” Francis said. “Our teams love being part of these relaxed and joyful moments.”

Francis emphasized that RMTD’s services are free, but the organization relies on community support to sustain its work. “We’re a small organization with big plans,” she said. “Right now, more than funding, we need volunteers—especially those with skills in accounting, marketing, or grant writing. And for those who want to support a team directly, a $250 sponsorship covers liability insurance, uniforms, and ongoing education.”

Looking to the future, Francis hopes more people will reach out. “Sometimes people think therapy dogs are just for hospitals or nursing homes, but we’re here for individuals too,” she said. “Whether someone is undergoing chemotherapy or struggling with anxiety, all they need to do is ask. We’re here to help.”

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
