HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — After taking in a record number of animals in May, the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA is hosting a ‘Name your Price’ adoption special on Saturday, June 14. The special will feature 10 of the rescued Broadway dogs.
In May, the RHSPCA experienced a record-setting month, taking in 319 animals, including 134 dogs. Among them were 58 dogs rescued from a large-scale hoarding situation in Broadway. The RHSPCA originally reported 58 but has since received another rescue from the home in Broadway.
While many of those dogs were adopted by foster families or transferred to area rescue partners, at least 10 of them, along with 45 other dogs, will be available for adoption at Saturday’s event.
“As a facility that averages 60-80 dog intakes a month, taking in [nearly] 150 in nearly one month was a stretch,” said RHSPCA Executive Director Huck Nawaz.
Nawaz said the May surge was an extraordinary challenge for the shelter. In addition to the increase in dog intakes, Nawaz said kitten season began in May as well
The ‘Name Your Price’ adoption special applies only to adult dogs. Regular fees normally range from $150 for senior dogs to $250 for small breeds under 25 pounds. Puppies are excluded from the promotion.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the RHSPCA, located at 2170 Old Furnace Road in Harrisonburg. Online adoption applications will not be accepted for this event; all adoptions must be completed in person.
All adopted dogs will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.
