The Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA has seen an alarming increase in the number of animals brought to the shelter, and the organization is scrambling to find space for canines in its care.

The shelter currently has more than 450 animals in its care; it only has 65 kennels for dogs on site.

RHSPCA has attempted to find permanent homes for the animals through an “Empty the Shelter” event running through the end of the month. The special allows you to name your price for adoption. However, the first weeks of the special have only resulted in 71 cats and 23 dogs being adopted.

The 20 percent increase in dog intakes is attributed in part to a post-pandemic puppy boom and to the rising cost of dog ownership.

RHSPCA relies heavily on foster homes to house the dogs and is also seeking the public’s help in finding adoptive and foster homes for the pets.

“Dog intakes have increased dramatically while adoptions have remained stagnant,” said Huck Nawaz, executive director of RHSPCA.

“We’re entering the last week of the Empty the Shelters, Name Your Price, adoption event and its concerning how many dogs still remain in our care.”

The Rockingham Harrisonburg is offering fee-waived adoptions throughout July for all adult dogs, cats and kittens available for adoption.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
