Rob Lowe was determined to get an Oscar, one way or another!
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor, 60, opens up about life as a dog dad to five pups: Owen, Olive, Daisy, Bella, and Oscar — the latter of whom he named for a special reason.
“I wanted to make sure that at some point in my life, I got an Oscar, so I have one,” Lowe, who has partnered with Ultimate Pet Nutrition, says with a laugh.
Lowe’s canine companion, Oscar, is a Jack Russell terrier whose half-sister is Daisy. Owen and Olive, meanwhile, are German shorthaired pointer half-siblings, and Bella is an Italian greyhound/Chihuahua mix.

According to Lowe, being a dog dad to five is no easy feat. “We definitely look at each other every day and go, ‘How did we end up with so many dogs?’ ” he says, referring to himself and his wife, Sheryl Berkoff.
The Floor host adds that raising numerous pets can feel like caring for a group of human children, saying, “One’s angry today, the other one’s feeling sick, or this one’s happy. This one wants to go to the beach; this one wants to stay on the couch.”

As for his favorite part of having so many animals in his life, Lowe explains, “I think it’s building the memories. You remember the hikes, the trips to the beach, the Christmas mornings. It really is very similar to how I feel about having children.”
“You look at them, and you think of all the amazing memories that you’ve been able to create together, and you love the companionship,” he continues. “And I think that the cliché of dogs being one of the few sources of unconditional love is really true — and really extraordinary.”
Lowe reciprocates the love his dogs give him by ensuring they always eat healthy food, which is why he partnered with Ultimate Pet Nutrition.
“I’ve had dogs my whole life, and I grew up in an era where the added level of making your dog’s food good for them was pouring warm water on kibble,” he tells PEOPLE. “Now we know how much ultra-processed food is in kibble and how there are so many better options.”
Lowe highlights that Ultimate Pet Nutrition was founded by award-winning veterinarian Dr. Gary Richter. The pet expert has merged his knowledge of animals and what they eat “into a way that’s really easy to understand and easy to enact for your pet,” the actor explains.
“People everywhere need to understand that what we feed our pets really actually does make a difference in their health and their happiness,” the father of two adds.
