COLUMBUS, Ohio — Rico Pet Recovery, a nonprofit in central Ohio, said they helped save 27 dogs from a home in west Columbus. The dogs are all the same breed, Chinese crested.
The nonprofit said the dogs came from a hoarding situation on the west side.
“We started getting these dogs in batches of like seven — eight at a time. So, as we took them in, we realized their conditions were less than ideal,” said Marci Dop, founder and director of Rico Pet Recovery.
The dogs came to Rico Pet Recovery in need of some serious care. Dop said their fur was matted and each dog had serious dental issues.
“There were several that had ear infections, a variety of parasites we treated for, skin infections,” said Dop.
Now, the dogs are recovering.
Kaitlyn Keegan is taking care of two of the dogs, Larry and Ollie. She said she was heartbroken when she got the dogs.
“Some of them have never been outside, never drank out of a bowl, never been on a leash,” said Scar Shine and Kaitlyn Keegan.
The good news is all of the dogs are now doing well and either adopted or in foster homes. Dop said slowly, they are becoming normal dogs.
“They are shy, still trying to figure out what’s going on. They were obviously under-socialized,” said Dop.
Dop said if you notice someone may be neglecting their animals, call someone. It could save them.
“If you see something, say something. I mean we have been involved in other hoarding cases before and the only reason many times we can come in and help is because somebody speaks up,” said Dop.
Rico Pet Recovery is still looking for people to adopt dogs. For more information, visit https://www.ricopetrecovery.org/.
