Residents pack Brownsboro City Hall to discuss dog-shooting incident

BROWNSBORO, Texas (KLTV) – Dozens of residents crowded into Monday’s City Council meeting to both hear a statement from the mayor as well as voice their own concerns and frustrations about a dog-shooting incident involving the chief of police.

Henderson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

Mayor Adam McLean confirmed in a statement on February 18 that Chief Ivan Medina shot a dog and that the incident was under investigation. Monday night, McLean gave his understanding of the timeline of events as to what happened on February 14, the day of the incident.

“Chief Medina responded to a call concerning an aggressive animal,” said McLean.

Upon arrival to the property, Medina then approached the backyard where the dogs were.

“As the dogs moved towards the fence and lunged at it, Chief, he draws his side arm and fires one shot.”

Other residents at the meeting claimed one dog was shot, but that the bullet injured two dogs.

“How he’s able to sit here obviously still on duty, is beyond me. I don’t trust Ivan with a firearm right now,” said one concerned resident. “I’m not shooting a dang dog behind a fence. That’s cowardly.”

“A chief should not have went in there without knocking on that door,” said another.

The mayor said the report of the aggression was the third in five weeks about the same group of dogs.

He said after the shooting, Medina immediately notified the owners.

“Of course he apologized. He didn’t want to shoot anyone’s dog,” said McLean.

Paige Hardin-Cooper is a neighbor to the residence where the dogs live. She said she was working from home when she heard the gunshot.

“You hear a gunshot, your kids, they were out of school that day – what if they would’ve been outside, you know, playing in the backyard, what if my dogs would’ve been outside? We can’t have a fenced-in backyard, I mean why are you just going to walk up to somebody’s fence and shoot their dogs… not even knock on their door, and they’re home,” she said.

“Enough is enough. I’m not going to be embarrassed to say ‘I’m from Brownsboro,’” said one resident.

The dogs are expected to be ok.

Chief Medina is still on duty, but is set to retire in March. According to the mayor, the retirement was planned and announced before the incident.
