SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County deputy and two others are recovering after being bitten by a pack of dogs on the far west side of San Antonio. The incident occurred on Sunday at the home of Henry Chapel on Elm Forrest near Talley Road and Wiseman.
Chapel, the owner of the dogs, expressed frustration with how the situation was handled. “If they would have just went back to the car like I told him to, they wouldn’t have my dog now, he wouldn’t be put down. I know that’s what they’re doing, because he’s a pit bull,” Chapel said.
The deputy was responding to a call about unrestrained dogs when he was bitten multiple times upon exiting his vehicle. He remains hospitalized. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that two other individuals were also bitten by dogs from the same pack on Sunday.
Chapel claimed the deputy was warned about the dogs’ aggressive nature. “He didn’t want to listen. He shot at my dog. He didn’t hit my dog, but nowhere in the foot. He shot him in the foot,” Chapel said. He added, “They ended up coming out, giving me all kinds of tickets for something that could have been avoided in the first place. Yes, my dogs were running loose. They had not bitten anybody until yesterday.”
Chapel stated that his dogs are strays, and Bexar County Animal Control has taken nine of his 13 dogs following the attacks.
A nearby neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed concern over the county’s response. “The county is saying that they’re going to come back and take them, and they never do, and I’m talking it’s been over a year since the first call,” the neighbor said.

Another neighbor, Maria Elena Rodriguez, recounted a previous incident where she was bitten while walking with her granddaughter. “I was walking with my granddaughter in the stroller, and I got bit, there was like five or six,” Rodriguez said. She reported the incident to the police twice.
Rodriguez’s son expressed frustration over the lack of action. “No changes. They’re still out there running around. Well, they were still out there running around, and nothing was done,” he said.
The nine dogs taken by animal control are currently being evaluated. Bexar County Animal Control reported receiving two complaints about the address in the past year.
