NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WJAR) — Earlier this month, New Bedford Police along with Animal Control rescued 21 dogs from a home on Myrtle Street.
After a few weeks of some much needed care, some of those dogs are now ready to be adopted.
“We don’t know if they have any triggers, what they went through in that other house, so we want to make sure we’re securing success for their future,” said Arianna Silva, the Director for Forever Paws in Fall River.
On July 8, police found 12 Cane Corso dogs in cages and 9 French bull dog mixes living in horrible conditions in a third-floor apartment.
Officials said access to food and water was low with some of the dogs covered in urine and feces.
After two weeks of veterinarian appointments and behavioral training, some are ready to find a new and safe home.
“Three to four definitive are going home, and we have a ton of meets for other dogs to be seen as well,” continued Silva.
In the meantime, police are still looking for 35-year-old Derrick Ambrose who was living in the apartment where the dogs were found.
A warrant was issued for 39 counts of animal cruelty and other narcotics related charges against him.
As for the dogs, adoption applications at Forever Paws are now available, but because of past treatment there are some rules.
“None of these guys are going to go with families with kids under 10 years old,” says Silva. “It’s why we do it, You see them, you see where they start off and see where they end up.”
