A dog owner from Canada has left internet users in tears after sharing a video of her rescue falling asleep on garbage, as if he were still in the streets.
The viral TikTok clip shared in October by @bringinghealthytoyou shows the pup taking a nap on the dining table, resting his head on an empty food package, just as he must have done before adoption.
“When your potcake [mixed-breed dog found on islands in the Caribbean] decides to go completely unhinged and revert back to his street dog instincts by falling asleep on a table using a piece of garbage as a pillow,” says a caption shared with the post.
Newsweek reached out to @bringinghealthytoyou for comment via TikTok comments. We could not verify the details of the case.
Stray dogs are a huge concern for shelters across the country, which are constantly overwhelmed with the arrival of new pets without an owner or a home.
It is estimated that over 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters every year, and at least 920,000 of them end up being euthanized, often for lack of space in the facilities.
Data published by Statista shows that there are more strays and abandoned pets on the West Coast than anywhere else in the country, with New Mexico taking the top spot on the list, followed by Idaho, Colorado, Montana and Nevada.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) website says that the first thing to do if you happen to find a stray dog in the streets is check the animal for any injuries or tags, and if you find their owner’s info, call them immediately.
If the pup doesn’t have tags, you can take them to a shelter, and then spread the word around by hanging fliers around a 2-mile radius of where you found the them, including your contact details so a possible owner can get in touch.
The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 438,000 views and more than 65,000 likes on the platform.
One user, Ulia Jean, commented: “At my work our company dog is a potcake, has infinite beds but chooses to sleep in the parking lot.”
Ash posted: “My former street dog exclusively sleeps under my bed to recreate the dumpster she used to live under.”
Bee added: “My potcake has FOUR beds but if I can’t find her, I just need to look out the window and she’s lying on gravel.”
