Barking is a dog’s classic way to get attention, but sometimes it doesn’t quite capture the mood. Bruce, a rescue pup, seems to think ordinary barks are overrated. Instead, he prefers to “talk smack” with groans, yawns, and expressions that say way more than words ever could. In a recent Instagram video, the rescue dog decided to voice his opinions in a distinctive way and has been having everyone laugh out loud.

Owner believes their dog doesn’t bark, he ‘talks smack’

The video opens with a close-up of the rescue dog as he tilts his head dramatically from side to side. The onscreen text reads, “Does my dog bark?” followed quickly by the punchline: “No, it’s worse…” Moments later, Bruce turns to his owner and makes a groaning, drawn-out “waa waa” sound, delivered with the intensity that feels like he is voicing a serious complaint. Then, in the middle of his “rant,” he lets out a big, exaggerated yawn, as if to say he has had enough. “He talks smack,” the next line reads, summarizing the mood perfectly.

Bruce’s dramatic delivery, complete with full eye contact, makes the moment even more entertaining. According to his owner’s caption, this isn’t a one-time performance. “If there’s one thing about Bruce, it’s that he’s going to tell me how he feels!” his owner writes. They go on to share how much they appreciate this side of him, adding, “Personally, I love that he feels like he can share his thoughts with us on a regular basis.”

Fans of Bruce chimed in with their own experiences of chatty pets. One user commented, “Oooh yesss give us the tea sir we love gossip!!” Another shared, “Sooo cute!! Well I have a howler and he does Chewbacca noises.” A third joked about Bruce’s intense delivery: “While maintaining full eye contact.”

Dogs use different sounds to communicate their feelings, and every pup has their own style. While barking is common, many dogs also make noises like whining, groaning, or even “talking” noises that sound like human speech patterns. Experts believe these vocal quirks often come from their desire to connect and be understood by their owners.
