Raleigh police said they are working with a family after an officer shot their dog on Christmas Eve.
The Negrete family was sitting down to dinner when they heard shots.
Lisbeth Negrete says her security camera caught the patrol car’s arrival, the shots and then her dog, Maxi, on the ground. There are gaps in the video she attributes to a technical glitch. WRAL News reviewed the video and saw those glitches.
Police were investigating a report of a stolen vehicle in the 3900 block of Alder Grove Lane, going door-to-door, in the Negretes’ neighborhood.
A police spokesperson said the dog charged toward the officer. The officer backed away, but when the dog kept coming, the officer shot it. The dog died.
“I just remember running up to him, hugging him,” Negrete said. “I cried. It was just so bad.”
Negrete said that Maxi was often outside, off leash in her yard, and that he was trained to stay on her property.
“He was just a nice dog, a sweet dog. He never hurt anybody,” she said.
“Why
didn’t he tase him, pepper spray? Why did they have to shoot him right in the
head?”
“This is not the result we wanted, especially during the holiday season,” a Raleigh Police Department spokesperson said.
The police department Internal Affairs Unit will investigate, per protocol when an officer discharges a weapon.
