
A Racine father of three is recovering in the hospital after a Racine police officer pulled him and two dogs from a burning home just after noon Tuesday. The rescue near Blake Avenue and Goold Street was caught on the officer’s body camera. The Racine police department said the video shows Officer Golden rush towards the home engulfed in flames without protective gear or supplies.”The officer was able to break into the home through the back door and found the adult unconscious on the floor and dragged him outside the burning building,” the fire department said. The fire department also said two children, who were already outside the home by the time firefighters arrived, were also taken to the hospital.Family identified the family of five that lives in the home as the Therkelsen family. Neighbors said the Therkelsens lost everything in the fire, and they are fundraising to help them with medical bills and housing costs. It was the scariest thing ever,” said Karina Martinez, who lives next door.Martinez is collecting donations of clothes and diapers at her home to help the Therkelsens recover. Family told WISN 12 News that as of Wednesday night, the father of three is still in the hospital, but the two children are home and healthy. “He did survive. He’s still in the hospital. He’s doing better, but he’s still not good,” Martinez said.The fire department estimates the fire caused $63,000 in structural damage and $17,000 in damage to the contents inside the home. Investigators are still looking into what caused the fire, and said the home did not have working smoke detectors.
