The dog was wearing a collar with no tag and did not have a microchip.
PHOENIX — A dog is looking for a new home after taking a wrong turn down a Valley freeway.
Grace Gompers said she found the dog running on Arizona’s busiest freeway interchange, the mini stack.

“Absolutely no way this little guy is just going to be running and going to get hit,” Gompers said. “I just couldn’t not accept that.”
Lucky for the dog, Gompers stopped the car and chased after him.
“I just start sprinting down the highway,” Gompers said. “He looks back at me and he just goes faster.”
With traffic nearly at a standstill, Gompers caught up to the dog. Then he bit her hand.
“He just had pure fear in his eyes, and I don’t blame him for biting me. He was just in fight or flight,” Gompers said. “At that point, he crawled under the car, and then someone behind us actually ran out and was like I have gloves. I can grab him.”
Once the dog was safe in the car, Gompers said his demeanor immediately changed.
“This dog was like resting his head on my leg. He gave me kisses. He was just so grateful. I was starting to form such an attachment. I was like this is love,” Gompers said.
Gompers took the dog to the Maricopa County Animal Shelter where they unsuccessfully scanned him for a microchip.
As much as she wishes she could, Gompers said she cannot adopt the dog she now calls Skippy.
She’s hoping someone who can give the dog a good home will take him in.
“It was crazy to see an animal in such distress,” Gompers said. “I kind of had the same adrenaline. Running on the highway. Genuinely, I had that feeling, too. So, I can’t even imagine like him not really knowing where he is or what’s going on.”
Gompers said the bite was minor, but because of protocols, the dog is required to quarantine at the Maricopa County Animal Shelter.
