PUP announce new album Who Will Look After the Dogs?

After releasing the single “Paranoid” last month, PUP are back with the announcement of their fifth studio album, Who Will Look After the Dogs?, due on May 2nd. Today, they issued the record’s latest single, “Hallways.”

Produced by John Congleton and recorded in just three weeks in Los Angeles, Who Will Look After the Dogs? can trace its origin back to the period immediately after PUP announced their last full-length release, The Unraveling of PUPTHEBAND, when frontman Stefan Babcock was in isolation after the ending of a 10-year relationship.

Inspired to write, Babcock went on an emotional journey of sorts, wrestling with feelings of past naivety, self-loathing, and, ultimately, self-acceptance. The songs that came out of that time — like the new single, “Hallways,” — reflect that growth, balancing the relatable frustrations with a sense of hopeful empathy.

Speaking about the single, Babcock explained, “Within days of announcing our last album, coincidentally titled The Unraveling of PUPTHEBAND, my life unexpectedly imploded. I wrote the lyrics for ‘Hallways’ while all that was going on. It was a weird fucking week.”

Referring to the line from “Hallways” that inspired the title of Who Will Look After the Dogs?, Babcock explained that it was “the very first thing” he wrote in preparation for the album. “I think it’s devastating, but in a ‘holy shit this is overdramatic’ kinda way, at least in context of the line that comes before it,” he said. “That’s what makes it funny to us. That overblown stuff we all say in our dark moments can be hilarious once you’ve cooled off a bit. I don’t know if anyone else thinks it’s funny, but sometimes you gotta laugh at yourself. It’s the only way out of the abyss. Trust me.”

“Hallways” arrived with a music video directed by Sterling Larose, featuring the band’s members physically interpolated with household furniture. Watch it below.

Meanwhile, PUP will hit the road in May for a number of European tour dates, with support along the way from Illuminati Hotties
