MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Public Health & Dane County reported on Wednesday that it is searching for a dog that bit a person on Tuesday.
Officials said the incident happened around 8 a.m. in the green space behind the 500 block of Sugar Maple Lane. The victim spotted the stray dog and began to pet it when the individual was hurt.
The dog is described as a mixed breed with a short, curly coat and floppy ears. The dog ran away after biting the victim and no owners were found in the area.
Public Health encourages anyone with information about this incident to call the Police and Fire Dispatcher at (608) 255-2345 and ask for an Animal Services Officer.
If the dog is not located, health officials said the victim may be required to complete a series of shots to prevent rabies.
Public Health said they respond to over 800 animal bites each year.
They released these tips to reduce bites in the community (their wording):
- When walking a dog, shorten the leash and leave enough space between your dog and anyone passing by to avoid contact.
- Teach children how to safely interact with pets, avoid hugging or kissing dogs and always ask permission before petting someone’s animal.
- Don’t use your legs or arms to break up a dog fight, instead find an object to break them apart
