GREAT FALLS, Mont. – As winter approaches, the City of Great Falls Animal Shelter is urging pet owners to be cautious of road salt, which can harm dogs’ paws. According to the shelter, road salt can cause irritation, dryness, and even chemical burns on paw pads. If ingested, it may lead to stomach upset and potential poisoning.
Signs of salt irritation include excessive paw licking, redness or inflammation, limping, and cracks or sores on the paw pads.
To keep your pet safe, consider using pet-safe deicing salt, trying booties for protection, and rinsing paws with warm water after walks.
A little extra care can ensure your furry friend stays happy and healthy this winter.
