A Pennsylvania lawmaker has introduced a bill that would ban dogs from riding in the external areas of a vehicle, including in pickup truck beds.Rep. Jeanne McNeill, a Democrat from Lehigh County, said the American Humane Society estimates about 100,000 dogs die each year while being transported in the back of pickup trucks. Dogs may fall or get hit by debris.McNeill added that if a dog falls or is thrown from a vehicle, it can lead to serious traffic accidents.The bill would only apply to public roads and won’t affect farmers or hunters transporting dogs on private farmland or hunting grounds.Under the proposed legislation, dogs can be transported externally in a secured cage or container designed to transport animals and protect them from the elements.House Bill 376 is currently under consideration in the House Judiciary Committee.
