RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Reach the end of the road in one rural neighborhood in Spanish Springs, and that’s where Dizzy Lizzie’s Dog Park is located.
Full of artificial flowers, and knick-knacks, there’s a dog pool, and dog toys.
This is where Ed Braunel comes with his two dogs Shy, and Reggie White. He says when he first heard about this private dog park, he was skeptical.
“I said she ain’t gonna make no money,” says Braunel. “Who is going to pay to take their dogs out in the hills. But she believed in it, and I’ll be damned.”
The 50 acres of land is open to one dog owner at a time. There is no traffic, no distractions.
Ed is a convert.
“For real,” he says. “It is just me and the dogs. So, we get to bond, really bond.”
The concept is the dream of Elizabeth Elgin.
This is her family’s property, and she has made sure the dog park is as welcoming as it can be. At the starting point “Pooch Place” there’s an information board, poo bags, water, and water bowls.
There’s also a covered area for dog owners. There’s a first aid kit, and a cooler with cold drinks. But that’s probably all for after a walk on trials like “Barks Boulevard.”
Elgin says she’s constantly coming up with ideas to make the walk here a pleasant experience with less anxiety and fewer distractions.
“You are the only person when you rent it,” says Elgin. “You are the only one in the park. It is all yours, and yours alone. No one is sharing with you. You don’t have to worry about anything.”
Elgin says it is reservation only at $14 dollars an hour.
She says the park can be rented for the entire day if that is the request. There’s a half hour buffer between time slots so no one has to come in contact with another dog or owner.
But don’t get the idea people are unsociable. One woman wants to hold her pug’s birthday party here.
Elgin says she tries to make it fun. She hopes to add more obstacles to her agility course.
Currently she has a scavenger hunt where owners can take their pictures right alongside their dog with items located on the trail.
