Postal Service kicks off national dog bite awareness campaign

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Last year, more than 6,000 postal employees experienced a dog attack. This year, the United States Postal Service is continuing its National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign to provide tips to dog owners for the protection of their dogs and all carriers.

This year’s theme is “Secure Your Dog, Keep Deliveries on Track.”

The campaign takes place each year at the beginning of the summer as more families are out enjoying warm weather with their pets.

Tara Jarrett, strategic communications specialist for USPS, said all dogs can bite. She suggested anytime a dog owner knows they are expecting a delivery they should put their pet in a back room and make sure doors leading outside are closed securely.

“We try to make sure all children don’t approach the carriers to get that mail from their hand,” Jarrett said. “That can, a lot of times those dogs think that is a threat and they’ll attack at that time. So, just trying to minimize any interaction that we have with the carriers just to make sure those dog bites don’t happen.”

Jarrett added USPS customers can sign up for informed delivery to help dog owners anticipate when their mail carrier will arrive to help prevent attacks.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
