PORTLAND (WGME) — The Portland Sea Dogs honored Maine’s deaf community in a big way Wednesday night.
It’s a group that was hit especially hard by the Lewiston mass shootings.
Wednesday night, the team hosted “Deaf and Hard of Hearing Awareness Night” to grieve, honor and fundraise for families and survivors.
The Sea Dogs wore specially designed jerseys.
Instead of the letters spelling out “Sea Dogs,” the jerseys have images of hands using sign language for each letter.
The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game to benefit the Pine Tree Camp’s “Dirigo Experience,” a program launched by one of the shooting victims, Joshua Seal.
“I think to be able to all come together in a supportive community and have the Sea Dogs support what we’re doing at camp and the deaf community is amazing,” Pine Tree Camp Director Dawn Willard Robinson said.
Seal’s son also got to throw out the first pitch of the game Wednesday night.
