Portland rescue One Tail at a Time PDX received the pups on Sunday. Some will be searching for their forever home at an adoption event this Saturday, 12 to 2 p.m.
PORTLAND, Ore. — Several rescued dogs traveled from Los Angeles to Oregon over the weekend after LA shelters made room for other displaced animals from the deadly wildfires. The Portland community quickly came together to help out as all seven of them are currently being fostered throughout the Rose City.
“He is a fantastic dog,” said Amy VanderVilet of Portland. “He is just a bundle of love.”
VanderVilet, who has fostered in the past, decided to take in one of the pups named Griffith. She said she wanted to help out in any way she could and what better way to do that than give a shelter dog a second chance at life — right here in Oregon.
“[I feel] really helpless and overwhelmed and it’s unbelievable. I can’t digest everything that’s happening right there right now,” she said. “It’s just too much. So, this is probably helping me as much as it’s helping the dog, you know?”
VanderVilet said she saw One Tail at a Time PDX’s plea on social media to foster these furry friends upon their arrival on Sunday.
As of Tuesday, over 12,000 structures have burned to the ground in the deadly fires. And with that reality comes displaced animals, too.
“I had to say yes,” she said. “I mean, I wanted to do something right,”
Griffith is about 2 years old, full of energy, and enjoys playing fetch and biting on sticks in his temporary backyard.
“He is still decompressing,” said VanderVilet. “And I know his personality is going to come out even more, but I know already that he is a total love bug.”
And while VanderVilet fills Griffith’s cup with toys and treats for the time being, she hopes someone can make Griffith part of their forever family.
“One dog at a time, one tail at a time, you know? That’s what you can do,” she said.
The One Tail at a Time – PDX shelter will be hosting an adoption event this Saturday, Jan. 18, at their Northeast Sandy Boulevard location from noon to 2 p.m. Some of the dogs from LA will be available for their forever home. The shelter will be posting more details on their social media platforms in the coming days.
