A pair of dogs named Red and Chance were returned unharmed Sunday morning to their owner after they were rescued from a log on a Rootstown creek.
Rootstown Fire Chief Chief Chuck Palmer said Tuesday that the crew responded after a 7:39 a.m. call from a Sandy Lake Road resident who reported hearing the the dogs barking and then discovered them on a log in Breakneck Creek.
“With the flooding and stuff, I don’t know how they got on the log, but they did not want to get off of it,” said Palmer.
Township firefighters arrived quickly and were joined by the Portage County Water Rescue Team. Firefighters set up a system of ropes so team members could get down the steep incline of the roughly 40-foot deep ravine to the creek.
Palmer estimated it took about 15 minutes to get the dogs to safety.
“They went right into the water and over to the log, and then they carried the dogs across the creek,” Palmer said. “The kudos has to go to the water rescue team. They did a great job.”
Palmer said the dogs’ owner, a Ravenna man, was identified from the collar on one of the dogs. He was contacted and came to get them.
