Sayreville police officers shot two dogs to stop an attack on a 10-year-old boy, according to the Middlesex County prosecutor.
Police responded to a 911 call on Nov. 4 at about 11:20 a.m. at the Knights Inn regarding an animal attack. The family member who contacted police stated their child was being attacked by the family’s dogs. When police arrived at the location, they observed the dogs mauling the boy.
“In an effort to stop the attack upon the child, the officers shot the dogs and in the process an officer was struck and superficially wounded by a ricochet,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit also responded to assist with the investigation, which is “active and ongoing,” according to the prosecutor’s office.
Both the 10-year-old boy and the police officer that was struck were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Both are listed in stable condition.
