Police: Monroe man threatens to ‘sic dogs’ on town tax collection employee

MONROE, CT — A Wheeler Road man allegedly threatened to sic his dogs on a female Monroe Tax Collector’s Office employee Monday afternoon, during a phone call that became heated, according to police.

Police said the employee called the resident about his unpaid taxes and he became angry and an argument ensued over whether or not he had paid it in full. He allegedly made the threat before hanging up.

When officers called him, they said the man told them it was all a misunderstanding. He was issued a warning.

Two nabbed in alleged theft of package

Monroe police detectives worked with Westchester County police to identify two suspected porch thieves, who turned themselves in on warrants Wednesday.

A 29-year-old Bronx, N.Y. man was charged with criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny and released on $500 bond for an April 16 court date.

A 31-year-old Bronx woman, who police believe was his driver during the theft, was charged with criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny and released on a promise to appear in court on April 16.

On Jan. 28, officers were called to Pastors Walk when a resident reported an attempt to steal his FedEx package containing a Verizon WiFi Extender.

He told officers he received the package earlier in the day, but had not retrieved it from his porch yet. He saw a man walking in the road past his house, but thought nothing of it.

Then motion activated his Ring camera around 11:25 a.m. and he saw the same person steal the package from his porch and conceal it under his coat, police said.

The suspect got into a white Toyota Camry with New York registration plates, which headed north.

Moments later the resident found the vehicle parked further down the road and confronted the stranger and the driver, who gave him his package back, police said.

Officers shared information with Westchester County police due to the New York plates and police, who conducted a motor vehicle stop there around 2 p.m., identified the driver and her passenger.

A DUI arrest

A 44-year-old Monroe man was charged with DUI after police observed him allegedly driving erratically on Monroe Turnpike in his white Ford pickup truck, near Colonial Drive.

At approximately 12:26 a.m., officers said they saw the truck cross over the double yellow center line, while heading north.

Police conducted a traffic stop and officers noticed the driver’s speech was slurred, his eyes were glossy and he had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him, according to the report. Police said he admitted to drinking “a beer or two” and field sobriety tests led to his arrest.

Police said several empty and full beer cans were visible inside the truck.

Later at headquarters, a breath test showed he had a blood alcohol level over three times the legal limit, police said.

The driver was charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain the proper lane. He was released on $500 bond for an April 29 court date.

Zoning out

A 22-year-old Trumbull man reportedly told officers he “zoned out” before crashing into the back of a 2007 BMW 750, while heading north on Monroe Turnpike in his 2018 Ford F250, just south of Gay Bower Road, Tuesday evening.

Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel evaluated both drivers and one passenger. The driver of the BMW, a 49-year-old Monroe woman, was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for further treatment of her injuries.

Police said the Trumbull man and a 39-year-old female passenger from Monroe, who was in the other vehicle were not taken to a hospital. The BMW was towed due to disabling damage.

The driver of the BMW told police she had stopped with traffic when the pickup truck crashed into the back of her car.

The Trumbull man was issued an infraction for following too closely.

The accident occurred around 5:50 p.m.

Three hospitalized following crash

Three drivers were hospitalized after being involved in a crash on Route 34, near the intersection with Monroe Turnpike (Route 111) April 3.

At approximately 9:46 a.m., a 21-year-old Bridgeport man was heading west on Route 34 in his 2005 Lexus ES 330 when he crashed into the back of a 2022 Toyota Corolla, whose driver had stopped and was waiting to turn left onto Route 111.

The driver of the Toyota, a 27-year-old Derby woman, told officers she felt a huge impact strike her vehicle in the rear, pushing her into the back of a 2024 Subaru Legacy, whose driver was also waiting to turn left.

The Derby woman and the driver of the Subaru, a 56-year-old Oxford woman, were both treated for injuries by EMS and taken to Bridgeport Hospital.

The Bridgeport man reportedly told police he attempted to stop, but couldn’t because of the wet conditions of the roadway.

He was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions and taken to Griffin Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

All three vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.
