JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) – Behind the bright colors and sweet treats at a beloved Jackson ice cream shop, authorities have uncovered a scene no one expected: multiple dead animals found in a freezer on the property of The Parlour of Jackson.
Jacob Tidwell with Jackson County Animal Control confirmed the discovery. “I found a freezer full of various meats and animals,” Tidwell said.
Animal control has confirmed at least six dead dogs and four to five other unidentified animals.
The freezer was located in a garage area behind the business. Scott Pienta, owner of The Parlour of Jackson, said it had been left behind by a former renter who hadn’t cleared out their things for the past few months since he’s owned the shop.
“I was disturbed, I was irritated, and then I’m frustrated that someone could leave those in my business,” Pienta said. He added that he’s been working to clean out the space for renovations, hoping to transform it.
Part of that delay, according to the former renter, stemmed from difficulties retrieving equipment. They said there were times they attempted to access the property but were turned away. They also denied knowing anything about the animals left inside.
Jackson County Animal Control is still investigating what kinds of animals were involved and whether any charges will be filed.
Despite the unsettling news, Pienta said the community response has been nothing but supportive. “Everyone has been coming in to support you. We’re here to support you,” he said.
Local officials are urging anyone who suspects animal neglect to report it immediately.
