LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office saved two people with cognitive disabilities who were reported missing amid freezing cold temperatures in recent days.
The first person reported missing was a 60-year-old man who left his Wadsworth home at about 11 p.m. on Friday. Temperatures had dropped into the teens at the start of the search, and deputies, police dogs, drones and other resources were used to try and find the man, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Early on Saturday, the missing man was found near the Wadsworth Savanna Forest Preserve by Lake County Forest Preserves police officers. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of cold exposure and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

At about 1:40 p.m. on Saturday, deputies responded to a report of an elderly woman, who had multiple cognitive disabilities and was reported missing in unincorporated Antioch, according to a news release.
The woman was last seen at about 12:40 p.m. and was believed to have left her home on foot.

Police used drones and police dogs in the search and found the woman lying in the backseat of a vehicle near her home, according to the news release. Paramedics took her to a local hospital for treatment for cold exposure, and she is also expected to recover fully.
Police said the timely rescues of both individuals “underscores the importance of coordinated efforts and specialized resources.”
“In the span of just 24 hours, the dedication and teamwork of our sheriff’s deputies, K9 teams, and law enforcement partners saved two lives. Despite the harsh outdoor elements, these highly endangered individuals were found and brought to safety,” said Sheriff John D. Idleburg. “We extend our gratitude to all of our law enforcement partners for their critical role in these rescues and commend the exceptional skills of our K9 teams. This is a testament to the unwavering commitment of everyone involved to protecting our community.”
