EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Several dogs have been removed from an Evansville home and police say some of them were dead.
Tuesday, police say the were called to 34-year-old Megan Schmett’s home in the 2900 block of Madison Avenue.
They say an emaciated dog was found dead in the kitchen, and had clearly been there for a long time.
Officers say as they made their way through the home, they saw several dog crates with urine and feces, as well as more urine and feces throughout the flooring of the home.
They say two more dead dogs were found in a back bedroom.
Police say Schmett told them three dogs died in February, and she buried them at a campground.
Officers say they discovered those dogs were never buried and were some of the ones found in the home.
They say Schmett claimed she kept her home very clean, and an ex-boyfriend would plant feces around the house to make it look like she wasn’t taking care of her dogs.
Police say that ex has been in jail since early March.
They say another emaciated dog was under a blanket in the garage, clearly dead.
Police say Schmett told them she took it to a vet who denied care and told her it was dead. She claims the doctor stuck a knife in the dog’s eye.
Officers say she was trying to give it water with a Q-tip, and she claimed she had video of the dog alive from earlier in the day.
Police say there was no movement, and the dog had been dead for quite some time.
Officers say they spoke with a vet who told them Schmett missed several appointments and is known to take her dogs to various vets.
Police say 18 dogs were at the home in total, and four of them were dead.
They say she told them the dogs are her life, but she hadn’t been in the home for a few weeks because of the storms knocked out power.
Schmett told officers she fed the dogs on a schedule, but she wouldn’t give them water when she was gone because they made a mess.
They say she was taken to a hospital and tested positive for meth and cocaine.
Police say she immediately started trying to get the dogs back after they were taken.
She was booked into jail Thursday afternoon on 18 animal neglect charges.
