PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (WPTV) – Two dogs are looking for a new home after they were dumped along a dirt road in Florida with a heartbreaking note begging for help.
The dogs, Mella and Rocky, are happy and friendly, which is how their owner described them when they wrote in black marker on their harnesses and abandoned them along a road in Jupiter Farms. Tucked inside the harnesses were the dogs’ medical records and a note pleading for someone to help them.
The note read, “I am so sorry but ran out of time and options.”
Sarah Johnson took the dogs in overnight and handed them over to manager Janelle Marrone at the Furry Friends animal rescue Tuesday.
“It’s incredibly distressing to know people are ready, willing and able to just dump their dogs,” Johnson said.
The rescue is over capacity at its Jupiter location, but Marrone is making room for Mella and Rocky.
“Pretty crazy they were dumped like that,” she said.
Abandoning an animal is a misdemeanor in Florida, but Marrone says it’s still very common. She says overcrowding at shelters leaves people with no place to take their pets. Even the Palm Beach County shelter is experiencing a two-month wait for surrenders.
“People just panic and don’t know what to do and dump their dogs. It’s really awful,” Marrone said.
Furry Friends plans to reach out to Mella and Rocky’s owners, who are listed on the dogs’ medical records. Marrone wants to know why this happened.
In the meantime, the rescue is getting the dogs ready for adoption.
“I really hope these dogs get adopted very quickly and together. They are so sweet. In the short time they were with us, they were a true treasure,” Johnson said.
