PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – On Saturday, 65 cats and 38 dogs arrived in Portland from the Los Angeles area with help from Southwest Airlines, the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) and Greater Good Charities.
“It’s really heartwarming for us to be able to do our part in this recovery,” said Laura Klink with OHS.
Multiple wildfires are still burning near Los Angeles and have destroyed thousands of homes, displacing many families and their pets. The already overcrowded shelters in California needed to clear up space for animals displaced or injured by the fires.

This wasn’t the first time OHS has taken in shelter pets from the Los Angeles area but because they still have space and resources available, OHS jumped at the opportunity to help out once again.
Captain James Owsley piloted the flight on Saturday into PDX with more than 100 animals on board. He said it was smooth sailing for his crew and all of his four-legged passengers.
“Everyone was terrific and very well-behaved,” Owsley said.
This was Owsley’s first charity flight and he said the whole crew was excited to be a part of such a good cause.
“Of all the people that had anything to contribute, my role was perhaps the smallest,” Owsley said. “I can’t say enough about Greater Good [Charities] and the folks at Southwest.”
Many of the dogs and cats that just arrived in Portland will be available for adoption at OHS in the coming days. Klink said she hopes this will inspire people to think about adopting a new furry family member.
“Adopting a pet from anywhere helps pets everywhere,” Klink said.
